Museum Day is an annual event hosted by Smithsonian Media in which participating museums across the country open their doors for free to anyone presenting a Museum Day Ticket.

The Museum Day Ticket provides free admission to one person, plus a guest.

• One ticket per household
• A ticket will gain entry in only one museum and only participating museums
• Only an official Museum Day ticket is eligible for free entry. Official tickets can be found here on the Museum Day website.

Deal at Boston hotel in honor of Hurricane Earl

. . . Boston’s Back Bay Hotel was making its own preparations for the storm: a special room rate for the first 50 people booking a room Friday night to help fill the hotel on a slow weekend when many won’t travel.

Normally this time of year, a room at the deluxe hotel — built in the former Boston Police headquarters at Berkeley and Stuart Streets — would go for $275 to $315 a night. But, hotel general manager Stephen Johnston said, for people taking advantage of the promotion, “The price that you pay will be the highest wind speed as recorded at Logan Airport.”

So, “if it gets up to 90 or 100 miles an hour, well, that obviously will be tough for the city, but it’ll still be good value for a hotel of this style,” because you’d get a room for just $90 or $100 a night, plus taxes and fees.

“They may just get a great deal out of it,” Johnston said, “especially if the storm doesn’t turn out to be too strong.”

Inexpensive, low-calorie alternative to plain old boring water

I just learned of a couple recipes for these alternatives to water – apparently there are others out there like me who aren’t crazy about drinking plain water all day.

Caribbean water – add 1/2 cucumber, 5 strawberries, some fresh mint leaves to your water to infuse with fresh taste

Water w/pom – 1 oz pomegranate juice (or pomegranate/blueberry or other variety), squeeze fresh lemon juice in there, fill with club soda – a sparkling, tasty, refreshing drink – low-cal, plus antioxidants

Add four or five cut up strawberries or blackberries or both – tastes just like “O” water, lightly and not sweetly infused – minus the price-tag and chemicals.
